Ditsem Karoo

Certified Karoo Lamb

What Does the Science Say?

Independent research confirms the benefits of natural Karoo veld grazing.

Two studies by Stellenbosch University compared three groups of lambs:

  • Lambs that grazed only on natural Karoo veld
  • Lambs that grazed on veld with supplementary feed
  • Lambs finished entirely in feedlots
Finding #1

Favourable Fatty Acids

Veld-fed lambs showed a lower omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio β€” beneficial for heart and overall health.

Finding #2

Authentic Karoo Flavour

The distinctive Karoo veld aroma disappears when lambs are finished in feedlots, but is retained when animals graze naturally and are slaughtered at the correct weight (40 kg).

Finding #3

Better Colour Stability

Lamb raised on Karoo veld showed improved colour stability, supported by natural antioxidants found in Karoo vegetation.

If you see the Geographical Indication (GI) mark on your Karoo lamb, you know it is authentic β€” because not all meat labelled β€œKaroo Lamb” truly meets the standard.

What is GI Certification?

The Karoo Lamb mark protects authenticity.

Karoo Lamb is officially recognised as a Geographical Indicator (GI), meaning only lamb originating from this unique region in South Africa may bear the Karoo Lamb mark. Think of GI products from other parts of the world β€” champagne, Parma ham, Parmesan cheese β€” and the value these bring to their producers.

What does the GI mark on Karoo Lamb guarantee?

  • Truly comes from the Karoo region
  • Is safe and healthy food
  • Has been processed and packaged according to specific legal standards
  • Is free-range, not exposed to cultivated pastures or feedlots
  • Contains no harmful hormones or antibiotics

Why is this important?

Knowing where your food comes from is vital, as is supporting farmers who deliver their products ethically and with traceability. The Karoo Lamb mark ensures you receive a high-quality product, and you’ll taste the difference on your plate. Karoo Lamb tastes of the veld, of wild herbs, fresh air, and sunshine.
